cULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING
pOSITION pAPER
In ECI 541, Reading in the Content Areas, I wrote a research-based paper on a topic of my choice. I chose the topic of why culturally responsive teaching is important in the classroom. In this paper, I emphasized how culturally responsive teaching increases student achievement and engagement. Part of culturally responsive teaching is connecting to student’s backgrounds. Having text that connect to students' lives will encourage them to be engaged in the reading.
Scaffolded Reading Experience
In ECI 541, Reading in the Content Areas, I designed and implemented a reading lesson on culture. In the lesson I read aloud, This is How We Do It: One Day in the Lives of Seven Kids Around the World by Matt Lamothe. This book highlights how we are different, but also the similarities we share. The book connects to students’ lives. The children in the story share similar cultures to my students. Connecting to their lives will allow students to be curious about the topic and engage them in the reading.
Global Learning Inquiry
In ECI 524, Theory and Research in Global Learning, I created a global learning inquiry. I chose the topic cultural diversity. Students learned about holidays that are celebrated around the world. Students learned about the differences and similarities they share with people around the world. Students are engaged in the learning when it connects to their lives.
Reading for Social Justice Book Talk
In ECI 546, New Literacies and Media, I conducted a book talk with a social justice book. I read Ruby’s Wish by Shirin Yim Bridges. This book discusses the inequalities in China and promoting women equality. Having books that are mirrors and windows for your students is important. Mirror books allows students to connect and reflect on their own culture. Window books offer a view into someone else’s experiences.
